About the organisation
Through its work, the Muslim Archive (MA) aims to embrace the reality of the super-diverse society and offer a counterweight to one-dimensional approaches that exclude multiple identities and intersectionality.
The ‘Archive’ in the name refers to the collection and preservation function. In addition, the Muslim Archive is a cultural-educational centre that will unlock the collected material, making it accessible and recognisable to a wider audience.
‘Muslim’ in the name refers to Muslims in all their diversity. (MA) creates an archive of the lives of Muslims in the Netherlands, with all their religious, cultural, and personal richness, in an inclusive way, without excluding anyone.
The Muslim Archive began as part of the Fahm Institute under the name Dutch Muslim Archive to emphasise that the ‘Dutch’ and ‘Muslim’ partial identities, histories, and perspectives coexist harmoniously. The name was later changed to Muslim Archive upon becoming an independent entity.
The working group of the Netherlands Muslim Archives (NMA), in collaboration with diverse Dutch Muslim communities and partners from the cultural and academic sectors, is identifying priorities for collection. Their work began with mapping existing materials to assess what has already been preserved and how it can be better safeguarded and highlighted. In addition, the group conducts research to determine what should be collected and develops strategies for how these materials can be gathered effectively.
